Jaguar Manual Roof Operation XK8 or XKR

How Do You Let The Convertible Top Up & Down Manually?

To Open the Roof Manually:
If you insist in operating the roof manually you can do this by opening the windows electrically by pressing the open button and they will retract, open the petcock at the pump to release the hydraulic pressure, unlatch the latch at the header with the allen wrench, release both rams left and right by applying pressure to the top of the rams located behind the rear windows. Note: do not bend or force them you will reduce the integrity of the roof interlocking. Once you have done that you can now open the roof and retract the header latch with the allen wrench.

To Close the Roof Manually:
To close the roof you just pull the roof to the closed position, open the roof header latch and latch the roof manually with the allen wrench. Then you will need to manually latch both the left and right rams. That means that you will need to apply upward force to the roof mechanism at both rams until they lock into position. Note: if the rams are not closed properly the windows will not go up. The right ram has switches that if they are not satisfied you will get no power to the windows to close them. Once you close the roof rams properly then you should be able to close the windows electrically by pressing the close roof button. Call 888-317-934024/7 if none of this makes sense.

Convertible top: conversion to manual latch operation

Procedures for Raising / Lowering the Convertible Top with Manual-latch

Lowering the Top

1. Open the latch by turning the hex key fully clockwise, about 100 degrees.
(The car detects this, sounds the chime, lowers the rear windows.)
2. Press and hold the "Roof" rocker switch on the console, in the "down" direction, until the top is lowered.  Release the "Roof" rocker .
(Watch in the rear-view mirror for the top to complete lowering. No precision required here.)
3. Close the latch by turning the hex key fully counterclockwise.
4. Press the "Roof" rocker again .
(If "top not latched" message does not appear, all done!    Only If message appears ... Wait ~ 5 seconds, press the "Roof" rocker again .)

Note on step 2.: Room for improvement. The top should move up and back immediately. If it doesn't, press up on the top liner in the area in front of the hand cutout, or apply torque to the hex key in clockwise direction, while continuing to press "Roof" rocker. Thanks to SteveInFrance at JaguarForums.com for suggestion here. (This bug can happen, I think, because of the way the top is parked hovering above the windshield before being pulled down by the latch when we close the top. It behaves a bit differently with manual-latch v. a stock system. I hope to improve on this bug.)

Raising the Top

1. Open the latch by turning the hex key fully clockwise, about 100 degrees.
2. Press and hold the "Roof" rocker switch on the console, in the "up" direction, until the top contacts the latch.
3. Apply light torque to the hex key (something like what you would use to close a garage door handle) in a counterclockwise direction while continuing to press the "Roof" rocker.  This procedure requires using both hands.  Initially, the latch does not move, but after a delay of a few seconds you will feel the latch "give" under the applied torque and begin to close.
(The pump has reversed directions; it "thinks" it is pulling the latch closed.)
4. Close the latch by turning the hex key fully counterclockwise while continuing to press the "Roof" rocker.
(If the chime sounds and the rear windows close, all done!   Only If rear windows don't close ... Wait ~ 5 seconds, press the "Roof" rocker again .)

Convertible top will not close in auto or manual

Convertible top will not close in auto or manual.
I have a 2007 Jag XK convertible and when I try closing it automatically it will come within about 10 inches of the windshield and stop. It is also swinging the locking hooks at the end of this sequence to early and about a foot from it being within range of locking on the windshield. I have been able to successfully manual close the top in past by using the allen wrench in trunk turning it counterclockwise and pulling cable then wrenching down from inside on the top of convertible top, but this time it does the same thing as it does in auto mode and swings this hooks to early and freezing up about a foot away from the windshield. I can manual stow the top with no problem and have disconnected battery and re-sequenced the main windows then run the auto mode to bring up the bonnet to close position many times and I get the same result every time. Any help is appreciated.

Step 1 -- lower top all the way.
Step 2 -- relock top pump with the allen wrench
Step 3 -- disconnect battery
Step 4 -- drink cocktail ( <-- important step. helps keep you calm in the event you have to redo the steps)
Step 5 -- reconnect battery
Step 6 -- enjoy top up motoring again.
